Xlink Kai for Windows PSP Configuration Guide
For the Xlink Kai beta version released 7/14/06

What is covered by this guide?
Use this guide to get Xlink Kai to work with your PSP if you are running the Kai engine on a Windows 2000/XP[/Vista?] computer. This guide does not include information for setting up Linux, OSX, or Linksys wireless routers.

This guide applies to the latest beta version of Xlink Kai, which is available here: http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/?go=download

What do I need to use my PSP with Kai?
You will need a compatible wireless adapter connection to your PC that is dedicated to connecting to the PC. You can not use this adapter to also connect your PC to the Internet. You can use a second wireless adapter to connect to the Internet if you wish.

What wireless adapters can I use to connect to my PSP?
The only adapter that has been tested by Team Xlink is the Datel Wifi Max. It is available for around US$40 at most computer stores, as well as game stores like GameStop/EB and online. The Wifi Max is built around the Zydas ZD1211B chipset. Any other brand of adapter using this same chipset will also work. This includes the Planex adapter which is widely available in eastern Asia. Other adapters may work, but you’ll have to try them to find out.

What drivers should I use (Wifi Max / Zydas ZD1211B chipset)?
You can download the latest drivers from the Zydas web site here. You must completely uninstall any other drivers, such as the Datel drivers that came with the Wifi Max, before installing the Zydas drivers.

How do I configure my PSP?
Your PSP should be set to Ad-Hoc mode, and it is recommended that you set it to a fixed channel. Any channel will work – you may find that one works better than the others depending on what other wireless devices are nearby. It does not matter what channel you pick – this will not affect your connection to other players. These settings are found under “Network Settings” from the PSP menus.

How do I configure my Windows wireless settings?
You do not need to configure any wireless settings in Windows. You must close any wireless utilities such as the Zydas Wireless LAN Configuration Tool before running Kai.

How do I configure Kai?
Once you have installed Xlink Kai, run the configuration utility. In the “Network adapter” list, select the wireless adapter that you will be using to communicate with the PSP. If it is not listed, try selecting the “Show dangerous NICs” option. If it is still not listed, then the driver for your wireless adapter is not installed correctly. Next, make sure the “Follow PSP SSID” option is selected, and then click OK to save your settings.

How can I test my settings?
Load Kai and log in. Click the magnifying glass icon at the top of the window, then click the folder icon below that. You will likely see the message “No consoles have been detected yet!” Now from your PSP’s main menu, go to the Photo icon and hit the triangle button. Select “Receive” and hit X. The PSP should display “Connecting…Please wait…” On your Windows computer, Kai should pop up a message saying that it changed your SSID to PSP_S000000001_L_PhotoExc. In the Kai window you should also see your PSP added to the list of devices. You are now ready to play!

Troubleshooting
Make sure you’re using a compatible wireless adapter. Many adapters do not support “promiscuous mode” and do not work with Kai. There is nothing we can do to work around this problem.

Make sure you’re using the correct version of the drivers. For Zydas chipset adapters, this is version 6.3.1.0 or later. You can see the version of driver that is installed from the Windows XP Device Manager.

Close wireless configuration software. Programs like the Zydas Wireless LAN Configuration Tool interfere with Kai’s ability to automatically configure your wireless adapter to connect to the PSP.

You may need to temporarily disable your firewall software if it is blocking Kai from seeing the network traffic that it needs. Guide obtained from xlink kai
