blakey is right you need cfw or modify your battery but hard modding psp battery isn't noob friendly better utilize the phat psp and create pandora ms & battery

When i got the redscreen, I could not get into recovery mode at all for some reason, I tried to put offical firmware and everything onto it but it kept on red until i made a new memory stick.So even if it does all go to pot, it can be fixed.Just for the info, i Jumped straight from 3.72 to 3.90 cfw.. the read me for the 3.9 custom firmware just said it needed 3.5 or higher, so i tried it and it worked without flaw.Also i have a neat tip for people who just get blank screens when they put the battery in wiith the magic memory stick.If you format the memory stick through the xmb, and then run mspformat manually through cmd prompt. If it gives you the error "fat 12 not supported" then the card is no good.Using the above installer will give you the same error, but it will happen so quick you wont see it, and will think it worked fine. Doing it manually will freeze it on the error.Could come in handy to help people troubleshoot if their card is the problem or not.

yes, but it might be a little difficult, and to format it go to settings, system settings, format memory stick
